Solid versus hollow cabinet knobs and pulls: why it matters.

The cabinet and drawer knobs and pulls that are stocked at big box home improvement stores and hardware stores are typically hollow. Hollow knobs can also be found in kitchen cabinet showrooms and decorative hardware showrooms on their lower end “builder grade” knobs and pulls. You can tell a knob is hollow by picking one up and holding it. It’s light. You may also notice that the back of the knob or pull is also hollow. This reduces the amount of metal in the knob or pull, which reduces the cost. But it also reduces the longevity of the knob. Less metal can also cause sharp edges that aren’t comfortable to the touch.

If shortcuts have been taken on the metal, then it’s also likely that shortcuts have been taken on the finish – fewer coats, less polishing, fewer coats of protective lacquer, and thus more vulnerable to tarnishing, the finish rubbing off, and changes to the finish color over time. The knob or pull may also have rougher edges due to mechanical finishing vs. hand finishing.

You can feel the quality of Top Knobs in your hand. Most Top Knobs products are solid metal – solid brass, bronze, iron, steel, etc – and they are heavy! A solid knob is far less vulnerable to denting or creasing. The heavier weight feels good in your hand. The screw threads extend through the solid knob, making it far less vulnerable to stripping than a hollow knob with far fewer threads. And because every Top Knobs product is hand finished, they are smooth to the touch with no rough edges.

There are a few hollow knobs and pulls in the Top Knobs product line. If the design on the product is very intricate, the metal has to be pressed into the mold rather than poured into the mold. This requires using a flat sheet of metal, which is then formed to create the rest of the hollow knob or pull. This is actually are more costly and involved production process, but the result is a beautiful and intricate design and appeal!

Around the world with the Passport Collection: Great Wall

The Great Wall of China’s 5500-miles of ambling towers, steps and gateways traverse jagged mountains, vast deserts and rolling grasslands. Each individual brick or stone, placed by human hands, has acted together to create a barrier against invading armies over the centuries.

What does this have to do with cabinet hardware? It is the geometric shapes of the Great Wall, contrasting with the panoramic views of the Chinese countryside, that are the inspiration for the Great Wall Series of the Top Knobs Passport Collection.

In The News: Top Knobs becomes part of classic townhouse restoration

07 14 Traditional Home (TK)_edited-1Interior designer Mary Douglas’ recent restoration project of a 1920s townhouse is featured in the latest issue of Traditional Home magazine and Top Knobs is part of the classic transformation.

Washington D.C. couple Barbara and Bill Sullivan, owners of the stunning townhouse on Embassy Row which Douglas re-decorated, are friends of the designers and knew of her talent and decor style from her flawless track record working with clients.

Douglas has been working to restore the “classic jewel box” for over 20 years and says “It’s really just evolved just as I have.”

The townhouse was build in 1924 by local architect Robert O. Scholz and the Sullivans wanted the place to have as much of a vintage feel and look as possible. Douglas was able to provide that by reintroducing vintage elements such as historic crown moldings, friezes, paneling and wood trim- all things synonymous with historical beauty.

The kitchen includes a silk checkered fabric used for draperies which sets the foundation for the rest of the room’s design.  Top Knobs cabinet hardware was used to highlight the beautiful cabinetry.

“It has a simplicity and directness to it,” says Barbara Sullivan of her new restored home. “And at the end of the day, that’s what I hope people take away with them when they visit us: that they’ve been to a warm, inviting home that offers up a little bit of s surprise in each and every room.”.

The article “Past Perfect” from Traditional Home magazine is written by Brielle M. Ferreira, produced by Jenny Bradley and photographs by Ron Blunt.
